Gerry Vergult is one of those idiosyncratic figures in Belgian rockmusic. He first appeared in public with a band called The End, but some time later he founded the legendary Aroma Di Amore (with Elvis Peeters), a band that existed from 1982 till 2022. They released several albums, mini-albums and singles, and toured all over Europe with lots of critical acclaim. Besides this he played in a lot of other bands, composed music for film and theatre and produced records for other artists. Nowadays, his main artistic outlet is Zool. Zool. released six albums so far and the seventh is on its way. But as Fred Angst he will also release an album on which he will continue the musical tradition of Aroma Di Amore.
Gerry plays guitar, bassguitar, keyboards and is an experienced laptop recording and producing engineer. He lives in Antwerp.
Gerry Vergult is één van de meest merkwaardige figuren in de Belgische rockmuziek. Hij verscheen voor het eerst in het publiek met The End, maar enige tijd later stichtte hij (met Elvis Peeters) het legendarische Aroma Di Amore. Deze band bestond van 1982 tot 2022, bracht talloze platen uit en toerde over heel Europa, met een schare trouwe fans tot gevolg. Daarnaast speelde hij in diverse bands, componeerde voor film en theater en producete voor andere artiesten. Heden ten dage is zijn belangrijkste muzikale uitlaatklep Zool. Hiermee bracht hij tot dusver zes albums uit en een zevende staat in de steigers. Maar als Fred Angst brengt hij in 2024 ook een solo-album uit waarop hij de Aroma Di Amore traditie verder zet!
Gerry speelt gitaar, basgitaar, keyboards en is een ervaren laptopproducer. Hij woont in Antwerpen.
When Aroma Di Amore broke up at the end of 2022, Fred Angst's creativity and ambition was far from waning. So, the idea quickly arose to continue the tradition and he started working on a solo album. For this he could count on the support of a whole bunch of artist friends, such as Marcel Vanthilt, Sietse Willems, Roos Janssens and Philippe Gunst, and former colleagues Elvis Peeters and Lo Meulen contributed to the record too.
The album will be called "Stockholm Syndrome" and the theme is the political and economic degradation of our society, and the incomprehensible apathy of the masses.
In his lyrics, Angst reflects on today's society and how it is being destroyed. Not only by world leaders and captains of industry, but also by, for example, the neighbour who votes far right. Angst searches for explanations but does not find them, or it would have to be the dominance of the masculine. After all, in world's history it's men who mess up the world. But Angst himself is a straight white man, on the wrong side of history, and he certainly suffers from that.
The release is scheduled for end 2024, but a first single will be released in september of this year.
Als Aroma Di Amore eind 2022 een punt zet achter hun carrière is de creativiteit en de ambitie van Fred Angst echter nog lang niet opgedroogd. Zodoende ontstond ook al snel het idee om de traditie solo verder te zetten en sloeg hij aan het werk om een nieuw album te realiseren. Daarvoor kon hij een beroep doen op een hele rist bevriende artiesten, zoals o.a. Marcel Vanthilt, Sietse Willems, Roos Janssens en Philippe Gunst en ook oud-kompanen Elvis Peeters en Lo Meulen droegen hun steentje bij.
Het album zal "Stockholmsyndroom" gaan heten en in zijn teksten reflecteert Angst op de maatschappij van vandaag en hoe die wordt om zeep geholpen. Niet alleen door de wereldleiders en de captains of industry, maar bvb ook door de buurman die extreemrechts stemt. Angst zoekt naar verklaringen maar vindt ze niet, of het zou de dominantie van het masculine moeten zijn. Tenslotte zijn het toch voornamelijk mannen die de wereld naar de kloten helpen. Maar Angst is zelf een witte heteroman, hij staat aan de verkeerde kant van de geschiedenis dus, en daar lijdt hij wel degelijk onder.
Het album is gepland voor eind 2024, maar in september zal reeds een eerste single de wereld worden ingestuurd.
Zool. stands for instrumental leftfield music, mixing electronic textures, subtle beats, crispy percussion, dubby bass, moody synths and hectic guitars with diverse influences that go from Brian Eno, over The Shadows, Pink Floyd, Ennio Morricone, Nils Frahm, Sonic Youth or Mogwai. Kind of cinematic music.
Zool. released six albums so far: Vadem (2006), Camera (2009), Ballroom Blitz (2014), Bombykol (2017), The Time Remaining (2021) and Humanity/Empathy (2022, with Butsenzeller). A seventh album will see the light of day in 2025.
Zool. staat voor een eigen soort instrumentale muziek: soundscapes, subtiele beats, knisperende percussie, dubby bas, moody synths en hectische gitaren vormen de kern van zijn universum. Zool.'s invloeden zijn zeer divers: van Brian Eno, over The Shadows, Pink Floyd, Ennio Morricone, Nils Frahm, Sonic Youth of Mogwai. Zeer filmische muziek dus.

Het Kruim (the crumb/the cream of the crop) is the lighter side of Vergult's musical spectrum, playing funky, groovy, loungy tunes. With main influences of Booker T., Chakachas, Condor Gruppe or John Barry.
Het Kruim released 4 singles to date: Voorbode (Forerunner), Zet uw vink (Put Your Finch), Hittegolf (Heatwave) in 2022 and Hartvuur (Heartfire) in 2023.
A full album Vinyl & Karton (Vinyl & Hardboard) is planned for 2025.
Het Kruim is Vergult's jongste geesteskind en bevindt zich aan de lichtere kant van zijn muzikaal spectrum. Beïnvloed door de muziek van o.a. Booker T., Chakachas, John Barry of recentere artiesten als Condor Gruppe of Compro Oro, maakt Het Kruim het mooie weer met muziek voor mensen met feestzucht en danslust.
Tot hiertoe bracht Het Kruim 4 singles uit: Voorbode, Zet Uw Vink en Hittegolf (2022) en Hartvuur (2023).
Voor 2025 staat de release van een album Vinyl & Karton op de planning.
Nasca was a project Gerry Vergult started with Gerrit Valckenaers way back in 1987. They recorded one album that never got released, until now. Cortizona Records had it remastered, and asked Sarah Yu Zeebroek to create the remarkable coverart. The press and media praised the album, not at least for the reason it sounds like it had been recorded yesterday and did'nt lose anything from its original appeal. And so Gerry and Gerrit decided to reinvent the band for new gigs and maybe new music.
Nasca was een project dat Gerry Vergult startte met Gerrit Valckenaers in 1987. Ze namen een heel album op, maar het werd nooit uitgebracht. Tot nu. Cortizona liet de plaat hermasteren, liet een hoes tekenen door Sarah Yu Zeebroek, en tot ieders verbazing krijgt het album lovende kritieken in pers en media. Waarop Gerry en Gerrit besloten om de draad na 32 jaar weer op te pikken en met het Nasca materiaal de baan op te gaan.
In the 40 years of their existence, Aroma Di Amore has left an undeniable mark in Belgium's rock history. They started in 1982 and immediately gained acclaim after Humo's Rock Rally (contest) final. 35 years after the first concert (in the legendary Antwerp venue De Muze), Aroma Di Amore has put an end to its career in 2022. Four albums, a lot of maxi’s, mini’s, compilations and hundreds of gigs in Belgium and Europe: been there, done that. The band reinvented themselves at numerous occasions and every time they have been followed and appreciated by the fans and the press for their uncompromising and original post wave music . In 2018 they are represented in an exhibition about flemish and dutch music (Lang leve de muziek, Sint-Pietersabdij, Gent) and in 2022 a reissue-box 'Zwarte Doos', was released.
But guitarplayer Fred Angst will continue to explore the Aromasound with an album to be released in 2024.
In de 40 jaar van hun bestaan heeft Aroma Di Amore een onmiskenbare stempel gedrukt op de Belgische rockgeschiedenis. Ze werden in 1982 al meteen opgemerkt in de finale van Humo's Rock Rally. Vier albums, talrijke maxi's, mini's en compilaties, en honderden optredens in binnen en buitenland: been there, done that. De groep vond zichzelf telkens opnieuw uit en iedere keer waren bewondering en waardering voor hun compromisloze en originele muziek hun deel. In 2018 waren ze onderdeel van een tentoonstelling over nederlandstalige muziek (Lang leve de muziek, Sint-Pietersabdij, Gent) en in 2022 verscheen 'Zwarte Doos', een overzichtsbox met alle albums uit de jaren 80. Maar Fred Angst zet de muzikale traditie van AdA verder op een album dat in de loop van 2024 zal verschijnen.
